I found this study task pretty difficult, this was the first time I've attempted a task like this. I chose my buddha statue because i've had it for a while on my desk o its an item I'm fond of and I also wanted to draw it because its human shaped. I first started sketching it roughly in pencil to get all the proportions. At the start I drew it with quite a lot of detail in the clothing but this became to difficult to keep this constant at the end. I finished it off with a fine liner pen and rubbed out the pencil line I was happy with how it came out but I should have spent longer inking as some of the lines weren't that neat. Some of the parts of the body including the face moves slightly out of place between. I felt my drawing skills improved whist doing this I will definitely do more of these.

Applied animation: 2b why?
I decided to go for brief 2b titles as this brief interested me the most. I chose this one because firstly I thought doing an adaptation of a book would be enjoyable, I wanted to try adapting a story rather than writing one myself since I've never done this before. I also wanted to improve my environmental/background drawing skills as this is something that really interests me as a discipline. Title sequences have to set the scene of the film and therefore normally use a large amount of environments.

making a truck in maya (refuse to use the pun)
Today we learnt the basics of modelling in maya. This was the first time I'd used maya or any 3D modelling software of any kind so I learned a lot. At first I found maya incredibly difficult as I've only really used adobe software and it is very different. After some time and practice it got a lot easier at first frustration caused me to dislike the process but at the end of the session I started to enjoy it a lot more. We learned how to properly set up a maya document then create, transform and edit shapes into a finished object. At the end of this session we were shown materials/textures so I had a play around with those to see what rendered effects they'd give. These were the two final images created from it. The bottom one was me playing around with the glow settings in the ocean texture.
finished animations and feedback
These are my finished animations for the sound that I chose. I feel were definitely more successful than others and the feedback I received after the group critique was very useful. Similar to drawing to drawing the most difficult to animate was sound 48. I originally tried to a few methods digitally but the aesthetic lacked depth and therefore did not fit the sound. Feedback from the group suggested that the end of this animation was too jarring so with editing I hope to rectify this problem relatively easily. The other animation I was given critique was the cat sound, the line animation works however the background didn't fit. During animating I ran into a few problems with this originally trying to move the background lines digitally then tried to do it using water colours neither attempts worked very well. A static background would not fit this animation very well so I will try a different medium to animate the background by hand. I was very happy with the other animations, personally I felt the most successful was the magic baboo sound animation. It was inspired from a TV show Broad City's title sequence. I felt timing and the style of this animation fit the sound really well. The overall consensus from feedback was that the explosion sound and the magic baboo sound were most successful.

These were my final drawing in response to the five sounds that I chose. Some were definitely more succesful than others as drawings. ( 1 Top left: sound 48 2.Top right:electric moog slide 3.top mid: cat sound 4.bottom mid: magic baboo 5. bottom:quarry explosion) Personally I felt the interpretation of sound 48 was the least successful I found it hard to visualise this sound I think approaching it in other media may have improved the final outcome of it. I felt the quarry explosion sound came out the most successfully as I felt the shape and structure of the drawing matched the sound nicely. I would have liked to have spent more time experimenting with the drawing however I wanted to focus on animating them which was more time consuming.

sound experimentation
With each sound I tried to pick out the key aspects I could hear. I then tried to visualise the sounds in my head without too much thought instead tried to replicate exactly how the sounds made me feel and the visuals I would see in association with those sounds.I tried a variety of different mediums to try and bring across these visualisations. At first I thought about static movements before thinking about how these would be animated.
These two images I was looking at the electric moog slide sound. I wanted to try and capture the oscillating sound and the start up noise.
For the quarrying explosion sound I tried to detach myself from the context behind the sound and more what it sounded like. The whooshing noise at the end gave me a lot of ideas toward the approach.
I thought colouring for the cat sound was really important to emulate the depth of the sound correctly. I tried a few different colour schemes using water colour and inks.
I found sound 48 difficult to visualise because it had a lot of depth and fluctuation within the sound it was very inconsistent. After a lot of consideration I managed to get some ideas down for it however in the end I think it turned out the least successful.

sequence
This is my finished sequence in response to my final 8 development drawings. The ideas were based on the "planting the seed of knowledge". I wanted a sequence that showed how the addition of knowledge would unlock possibilities for a character. I was inspired by some of the dream sequences used in bee and puppycat. I tried to keep the style of the comic throughout relatively the same I feel that achieved it successfully. I think the narrative of the comic could have been better its not incredibly clear but I think the clean style doesn't help that, more detailed backgrounds may have made the narrative easier to follow.
This was the drawing from the set of 32 I wanted to expand on. I found the imagery and ideas behind this drawing the most interesting and wanted to explore them further.
I experimented with quite a few different mediums some were much more successful than others. I felt the cutout and the ink etching experiments were nope great I didn't like how they came out. I really liked using fine lines for the drawing thought it gave it a better depth however it the lack of colour made it less interesting. For the final comic I will combine a few of the techniques I've used here.

This first drawing I wanted to challenge the word plant and do something quite abstract/tenuous relating to the word.
I noticed that with white board markers on the sketchbook paper I was using that the colours bleed together and blend very nicely. I decided to experiment with a landscape I can see from my flat which looks a bit like a power plant.
I'd been experimenting recently with geometric shapes so I wanted to apply it to something odd. You never get straight lines in nature so i decided to raw a geometric styles orchid.
I started to draw from life in a cafe I had limited materials on me so I decided to do all the colouring with fine liners. I really liked the effect it created its definitely a style I want to explore further.
This drawing I tried to do without any outlines using ink. Inks a really effective shading tool which I found gave a much nicer depth than
Whilst watching the TV show Avatar they used scrolls with similar illustrations to teach them martial arts. I decided to do one from the tai chi I'd done that week where a lot of the focus is keeping your feet planted to the ground.
I wanted to work more with negative space and try and use the white of the page more. Here I wanted to portray the idea of planting the seeds of knowledge in someones mind. I was really happy with they way this came out both because of the ideas behind the image and the contrast in colour.
I thought it would be a good challenge to draw something with odd perspective and lighting. I really like when you look up into trees and the tree truck is virtually slighted but light shines through the leaves. I used inks to try and capture this, I think I could have captured the light a bit better.
After going to thought bubble event and seeing a large number of illustrators I was inspired to do a different more illustartive/comic style of drawing. A lot of comics Id seen that I thought were really effect only used one colour to shade with. I tried to replicate that doing a power plant worker. I really like the results this produced its a little scrappy but i want to use this more in the future.
